The highest scientific prize in nephrology in Germany, the Franz Volhard Prize, is awarded in 2020 to Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Peter Boor, Ph.D., Senior Physician at the Institute of Pathology at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen and Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dr. sc. nat. Thimoteus Speer, Senior Physician, Deputy Clinic Director and Head of Laboratory at the Clinic for Internal Medicine IV, Saarland University Hospital, by the German Society of Nephrology (DGfN), both PI in the SFB/TRR219.
Peter Boor received the award for his outstanding scientific achievements in the field of nephrology, focusing on the pathological processes of renal fibrosis (organ scarring). Thimoteus Speer recieved the award for his studies on the mechanisms of cardiovascular complications in patients with chronic kidney disease. The award is endowed with a total of 10,000 euros and they both accepted it at the annual meeting of the DGfN in Berlin on October 1.
The Franz Volhard Prize serves to promote and honor outstanding scientists in the field of kidney and hypertension diseases. It recognizes not just a single piece of work, but rather continuous involvement in a specific area of nephrology.
